The Phoenix is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization which offers a free sober active community to individuals who have suffered from a substance use disorder and to those who choose a sober life. Using a peer support model, we help members heal and rebuild their lives while also striving to eliminate stigma around recovery. Activities offered include CrossFit, climbing, hiking, boxing, running, yoga, road & mountain biking, and strength training. Through traditional fundraising strategies and revenue ventures, Phoenix is able to provide free programs for anyone with 48 hours of sobriety. The Phoenix currently operates in California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, and Massachusetts.


The Lowell Chapter Manager/Recovery Coach will oversee operations for The Phoenix chapter in Lowell, MA. This unique position will involve working directly with program participants in a recovery coach role as well as administering the Phoenix fitness program in partnership with the Middlesex Sherriff's Office (MSO), Office of Community Counseling. The ideal candidate will be an experienced Recovery Coach and program manager with a background in fitness and/or adventure sports instruction. A strong connection to The Phoenix Mission and commitment to leading by example are critical to this position; preference will be given to those with personal experience in recovery from alcohol or a substance use disorder.

The Lowell Chapter is a newly launching pilot program between The Phoenix and the MSO which will include an innovative approach to helping individuals with substance use disorders who have also had involvement with the justice system. By offering health and wellness programming for those receiving services through the MSO, this Phoenix Inside & Out program will help individuals sustain meaningful and long term recovery, minimize recidivism, and bridge participants to a sober active community of friends and peers.


  • Work as part of a larger Phoenix team to build a robust sober active community throughout Massachusetts and New England
  • Oversee a full array of Phoenix programs including Phoenix's free Community Programs, Enhanced Bridging (targeted programming for at risk populations, recovery coaching, and outreach), Volunteer Program, Workforce Development, Together Families Recover and Contracted Partnership programming with partner organizations.
  • Work in close collaboration with the New England Regional Director to build and maintain a productive and mutually beneficial partnership with the Middlesex Sherriff's Department
  • In collaboration with the New England Regional Director, formulate the chapter budget decisions and carry out the fund raising strategy for Lowell
  • Schedule, coordinate, and facilitate recovery coaching sessions with team members and participants
  • Build partnerships to improve access to recovery support and treatment for those living in the Lowell area
  • Oversee/manage general daily administrative needs and tasks of the Lowell Chapter, including scheduling programs, events, and outreach activities, and ensuring that facilities and equipment are in functioning order
  • Supervise the program and administrative staff of the Lowell Chapter including hiring, and training as well as supervision, discipline and termination as needed
  • In partnership with the Middlesex Sherriff's Office, ensure that justice involved participants receive services available to assist them with their re-entry
  • Provide peer recovery support in promoting wellness and resilience by reinforcing communication and social skills, problem solving, self-regulation, self-determination, and personal empowerment
  • Advocate for incarcerated individuals and inmates who are re-entering the community, helping them to locate goods and services such as housing, mental health services, clothing, healthcare, transportation to long term treatment programs, etc.
  • Coach multiple classes each week including CrossFit, Group Fitness, boxing, etc. in a safe, supportive and nurturing environment
  • Monitor ongoing performance metrics of the programs, provide feedback, guidance and training to impact results
  • Oversee the online presence (including both social media messaging and website maintenance) for the Lowell Chapter
  • Work closely with other Chapter Managers to coordinate on Phoenix-wide policy and procedure, learn from and offer advice to others in a collaborative manner.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and well-kept gym
  • Manage retail and merchandise inventory, restocking, and reordering
  • Assist with facility maintenance and upkeep to ensure the facility and programming space are trauma-informed (accessible, clean, safe, welcoming), reflect Phoenix core values and community standards
  • Attend and participate in local and national staff meetings, and programming and partnership team meetings
  • Review and respond promptly, accurately and cordially to all inquiries
  • Be an ambassador for The Phoenix at all times
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Work evening and weekend hours as needed
  • Travel for meetings as necessary



  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Recovery Coach certified preferred
  • 1-2 years of experience in a non-profit management role
  • Prior experience working in a correctional setting preferred
  • Experience facilitating group fitness or outdoor adventure programs
  • Experience with budgets and program management preferred
  • Knowledge and ability to assist inmates and detainees who have substance use disorder and or trauma issues
  • Possess excellent organizational and communication skills, professionalism, and the ability to quickly adapt to change
  • Ability to use standard office equipment, computer equipment, and proficient with software including word processing, spreadsheet applications and email
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to relate to people from all walks of life
  • Entrepreneurial spirit, humility, and integrity
  • Knowledge and consistent demonstration of excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to listen well and communicate effectively orally and in writing with various audiences.
  • Ability to work effectively with employees, management, customers, other governmental agencies, community members and the general public.
  • NASM, NSCA, ACSM, or ACE personal trainer preferred
  • Experience facilitating group fitness programs
  • Lived experience as a peer in recovery preferred
