ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW

The Phoenix is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization which offers a free sober active community to individuals who have suffered from a substance use disorder and to those who choose a sober life. Using a peer support model, we help members heal and rebuild their lives while also striving to eliminate stigma around recovery. Activities offered include CrossFit, climbing, hiking, boxing, running, yoga, road & mountain biking, and strength training. Through traditional fundraising strategies and revenue ventures, Phoenix is able to provide free programs for anyone with 48 hours of sobriety. The Phoenix currently operates in 33 communities across 22 states.

 

POSITION SUMMARY

The primary responsibility of this position is to lead and instruct indoor and outdoor rock climbing programs for The Phoenix in the Denver Metro area . Additional experience leading other activities (yoga, mountain biking, road biking, running, hiking, CrossFit, etc.) is a plus. A strong connection to The Phoenix Mission and commitment to leading by example are critical to this position; preference will be given to those with personal experience in recovery from alcohol or a substance use disorder.

 

The Phoenix is a dynamic, creative and fast-paced environment requiring employees to be flexible and able to adapt to an ever-changing environment. Full-time instructors at The Phoenix are also expected to aid in administrative functions of the chapter, such as keeping events up to date on our website, facility and equipment maintenance, conducting outreach events, assisting with fundraising efforts, trainings, or other projects that may arise. Weekend and evening hours and the ability to travel in the community are required.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Facilitate multiple rock climbing events each week (these are primarily held in an indoor setting, though the ability to facilitate outdoor climbing events is a plus)
  • Facilitate partnership and community programming as assigned
  • Assist with facility maintenance and upkeep to ensure the facility and programming space are trauma-informed (accessible, clean, safe, welcoming), and reflect The Phoenix Core Values and Community Standards
  • Contribute to planning and leading outdoor programs such as top-rope climbs, day hikes, backpacking, or car-camping trips
  • Spread the word about The Phoenix at targeted outreach events
  • Attend and participate in local and national staff meetings, and programming and partnership team meetings
  • Carry out administrative functions , including updating program schedule on our website, conducting outreach events and data entry
  • Support the achievement of quarterly and annual community programming and partnership goals
  • Manage retail and merchandise inventory, restocking, and reordering
  • Review and respond promptly, accurately and cordially to all inquiries
  • Be an ambassador for The Phoenix at all times
  • Contribute to social media through Facebook, twitter and Instagram
  • All other duties as assigned

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience teaching rock climbing (outdoor setting preferred)
  • Minimum High School Education or GED
  • AMGA-CWI and/or AMGA-SPI or higher certification preferred
  • CPR/AED preferred
  • 2-3 years experience climbing and 1-2 years climbing instruction experience
  • 1-2 years' experience leading outdoor programs (backpacking, camping, mountaineering, canyoneering, etc.)
  • Experience facilitating other group fitness disciplines is a plus
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to relate to people from all walks of life
  • Entrepreneurial spirit, humility, and integrity
  • Good organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to organize trips and events from big picture down to minute details
  • Demonstrate good verbal skills with the ability to communicate effectively with people in a group setting
  • Interact positively and comfortably with people from all walks of life, including homeless persons, recently sober individuals, high net worth donors, elected officials, etc.
  • Possess excellent organizational and communication skills, professionalism, and the ability to quickly adapt to change
  • Ability to manage and progress on multiple tasks within a given day or week
  • Ability to use standard office equipment, computer equipment, and proficient with software including word processing, spreadsheet applications and email
