The Phoenix is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to foster a supportive, physically active community for individuals who are recovering from a substance use disorder and for those who choose to live sober. By participating in our physical, social and education programs, participants build confidence, self-respect, and community. Activities offered include CrossFit, climbing, hiking, boxing, running, yoga, road & mountain biking, and strength training. Through traditional fundraising strategies and revenue ventures, Phoenix is able to provide free programs for anyone with 48 hours of sobriety. The Phoenix currently operates in 22 states, and will be launching a new chapter in Dallas, TX in spring 2019




The primary responsibility of this position is to lead programs for The Phoenix (these may include CrossFit or other group fitness classes, boxing, yoga, Olympic lifting, cycling, running, hiking, or other disciplines). This position will also be responsible for coordinating and representing The Phoenix at outreach events. A strong connection to The Phoenix Mission and commitment to leading by example are critical to this position; preference will be given to those with personal experience in recovery from alcohol or a substance use disorder.

The Phoenix is a dynamic, creative and fast-paced environment requiring employees to be flexible and able to adapt to an ever-changing environment. Full-time instructors at The Phoenix are also expected to aid in administrative functions of the chapter, such as keeping events up to date on our website, facility and equipment maintenance, conducting outreach events, assisting with fundraising efforts, trainings, or other projects that may arise. Weekend and evening hours and the ability to travel in the community are required.



  • Coach Multiple classes each week (these may include CrossFit, boxing, or other group fitness classes; hikes; road or mountain bike rides; runs; yoga; etc.
  • Under supervision of the Dallas Director of Programs & Partnerships, facilitate Phoenix programs including free Community Programs, Volunteer Program, and Contracted Partnership programming with partner organizations
  • Assist with facility maintenance and upkeep to ensure the facility and programming space are trauma-informed (accessible, clean, safe, welcoming), and reflect The Phoenix Core Values and Community Standards
  • Spread the word about The Phoenix at targeted outreach events, including identifying opportunities and scheduling events
  • Help design and build a robust volunteer program, including recruiting, training, and supporting a solid and sustainable base of volunteer support
  • Manage retail and merchandise inventory, restocking, and reordering
  • Attend and participate in local and national staff meetings, and programming and partnership team meetings
  • Carry out administrative functions, including updating program schedule on our website, conducting outreach events and data entry
  • Support the achievement of quarterly and annual community programming and partnership goals
  • Review and respond promptly, accurately and cordially to all inquiries
  • Be an ambassador for The Phoenix at all times
  • Contribute to social media through Facebook, twitter and Instagram
  • All other duties as assigned



  • Experience facilitating group fitness programs
  • NASM, NSCA, ACSM, or ACE preferred for group fitness instructors
  • CF-L1 or higher-level certification preferred for CrossFit instructors
  • YT-200 preferred for yoga instructors
  • CPR/AED preferred for all instructors
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to relate to people from all walks of life
  • Entrepreneurial spirit, humility, and integrity
  • Minimum High School Education or GED
  • Certification(s) in one or more disciplines
  • 1-2 Years' experience in program instructions within field of certification
  • Good organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to organize trips and events from big picture down to minute details
  • Ability to manage and progress on multiple tasks within a given day or week.
  • Demonstrate good verbal skills with the ability to communicate effectively with people in a group setting.
  • Interact positively and comfortably with people from all walks of life, including homeless persons, recently sober individuals, high net worth donors, elected officials, etc.
  • Possess excellent organizational and communication skills, professionalism, and the ability to quickly adapt to change
  • Ability to use standard office equipment, computer equipment, and proficient with software including word processing, spreadsheet applications and email
  • An ability to work in a high-paced, ever-changing environment
  • Willingness to be flexible with hours, including working early mornings, late evenings, or weekends as needed
  • Familiarity with other disciplines, including yoga, climbing, running, cycling, etc. is preferred
