The Phoenix is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to foster a supportive, physically active community for individuals who are recovering from a substance use disorder and for those who choose to live sober. By participating in our physical, social and education programs, participants build confidence, self-respect, and community. Activities offered include CrossFit, climbing, hiking, boxing, running, yoga, road & mountain biking, and strength training. Through traditional fundraising strategies and revenue ventures, Phoenix is able to provide free programs for anyone with 48 hours of sobriety. The Phoenix was founded in Colorado and now operates in 11 states.



The Phoenix is seeking an experienced and motivated individual to develop and manage a chapter in Philadelphia, PA and surrounding areas. The Philadelphia Chapter Manager will facilitate programs for the Phoenix in Philadelphia and pursue partnerships that help establish Phoenix as a hub of recovery in eastern Pennsylvania. The ideal candidate will have a background in coaching CrossFit or other group fitness classes as well as experience managing employees and coordinating events. A strong connection to The Phoenix Mission is critical; preference will be given to those with personal experience in recovery from alcohol or a substance use disorder.



  • Work as part of a larger team to build a robust sober active community in Philadelphia
  • Lead multiple group events each week such as CrossFit or other group fitness classes, hikes, road or mountain bike rides, runs, yoga, etc.
  • Facilitate Phoenix programs including free Community Programs, Volunteer Program, and Contracted Partnership programming with partner organizations.
  • Manage general daily administrative needs and tasks of The Phoenix - Philadelphia, including scheduling programs, events, and outreach activities, and ensuring that facilities and equipment are in functioning order
  • Spread the word about The Phoenix at targeted outreach events, including identifying opportunities and scheduling events
  • Help design and build a robust volunteer program, including recruiting, training, and supporting a solid and sustainable base of volunteer support
  • Analyze performance of chapter and programs, provide feedback, guidance and training to impact results
  • In collaboration with the National Director Staff, formulate the chapter budget decisions and assist in fundraising efforts for Philadelphia
  • Contribute to the online presence (including both social media messaging and website maintenance) for The Phoenix - Philadelphia
  • Work closely with other staff at The Phoenix to coordinate on Phoenix-wide policy and procedure; learn from and offer advice to others in a collaborative manner
  • Attend and participate in local and national staff meetings, and programming and partnership team meetings
  • Review and respond promptly, accurately and cordially to all inquiries
  • Be an ambassador for The Phoenix at all times
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Work evening and weekend hours as needed
  • Travel for meetings as necessary



  • Experience facilitating group fitness or outdoor adventure programs
  • Possess excellent organizational and communication skills, professionalism, and the ability to quickly adapt to change
  • Ability to use standard office equipment, computer equipment, and proficient with software including word processing, spreadsheet applications and email
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to relate to people from all walks of life
  • Entrepreneurial spirit, humility, and integrity
  • Lived experience as a peer in recovery preferred
  • Knowledge and consistent demonstration of excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to listen well and communicate effectively orally and in writing with various audiences.
  • Ability to work effectively with employees, management, customers, other governmental agencies, community members and the general public.
  • Experience with budgets and program management preferred
  • Bachelor's Degree preferred
  • Non-profit management preferred
  • Certifications in relevant athletic disciplines (e.g., CF-L1, CF-L2, NASM, NSCA, ACSM, or ACE Personal Trainer, AMGA-CWI, AMGA-SPI, IMBA-L1, or YT-200) preferred
  • First Aid Certification (e.g. WFR, WFA, CPR) preferred
  • Bilingual/multilingual preferred
  • Lived experience as a peer in recovery preferred
