The Phoenix - Sober Active Community

The Phoenix is driven by a desire to end the stigma around substance-use and build a sober active community to support each other in our journey to recovery. We are currently seeking candidates with deep connections in the community in San Francisco/East Bay.

You know how to relate to people from all walks of life. As our San Francisco/East Bay Program Coordinator, that will come in handy. You'll work with a diverse group of stakeholders including partner organizations, volunteers, non-profits, donors, the general public, and community organizations. You will plan and execute high-quality events focused on community engagement. We believe the key to success in this role is the ability to build long-term partnerships. Our programs are often volunteer-led so you'll be actively recruiting and engaging volunteers.

As you are reading this our San Francisco team is building new partnerships, recruiting volunteers and participants (Team Members), launching new programs, overseeing program operations, and leading events. In this program coordinator job, you'll roll up your sleeves and will be responsible for the activation strategy to launch The Phoenix in your region. You've got big ideas and we are ready to support you in experimenting and testing new ways of building community that will ultimately reach more members.


  • With support from the regional and national staff, work to build a robust sober active community in East Bay and surrounding communities
  • Build a strong volunteer program, including recruiting, training, supporting and retaining a solid base of volunteers who will lead the majority of Phoenix classes
  • Build partnerships with organizations and groups to improve access to recovery support for those living in the East Bay/SF area
  • Oversee and complete general daily administrative needs and tasks, including scheduling programs, events, and outreach activities
  • Lead or facilitate programs and ensure that all program spaces are trauma-informed (fun, emotionally and physically safe, inclusive and accessible), reflect The Phoenix's guiding principles and community standards, and adhere to program and discipline-specific standards
  • Utilize various technology and social media platforms
  • Work evening and weekend hours as needed- This is not a 9 to 5


  • 2+ years of relevant work or volunteer experience (community outreach, volunteer engagement, project coordination, etc.)
  • Passion for recovery from substance use disorder
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to relate to people from all walks of life
  • Community relations skills and ability to initiate partnerships from scratch
  • Changemaker-maker: You can bring volunteers, partners, and people alongside to join the movement, lead programs, and spread awareness
  • Entrepreneurial spirit, humility, and integrity
  • Organizational, communication and time management skills, as well as professionalism and ability to quickly adapt to change
  • Ability to use standard office equipment and computer software, including word processing, spreadsheet applications, and email
  • Knowledge and consistent demonstration of excellent customer service skills


  • Lived experience as a peer in recovery
  • Connections to recovery-centered organizations in Los Angeles
  • Fluent in multiple languages, especially, English, Spanish, Mandarin, or Cantonese
  • First Aid Certification (e.g. WFR, WFA, CPR)
  • Experience with Salesforce
  • Experiencing leading fitness classes, music programs, or other group activities

The Phoenix offers free programs for anyone with 48 hours of sobriety, operating in 65 communities across 24 states and for people around the globe virtually. Since 2006, we have served 60,616 individuals.
