The Phoenix is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization which offers a free sober active community to individuals who have suffered from a substance use disorder and to those who choose a sober life. Using a peer support model, we help members heal and rebuild their lives while also striving to eliminate stigma around recovery. Activities offered include CrossFit, climbing, hiking, boxing, running, yoga, road & mountain biking, and strength training. Through traditional fundraising strategies and revenue ventures, Phoenix is able to provide free programs for anyone with 48 hours of sobriety. The Phoenix currently operates in California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, and Massachusetts.


The primary responsibility of the Boston Director is to manage the everyday aspects and tasks of The Phoenix Boston, including overseeing the operations of a 10,000 sq. ft. climbing and fitness gymnasium currently under construction. In collaboration with the New England Regional Director, the Boston Director will work to ensure the overall health of all aspects of The Phoenix anchor chapter in Boston. Utilizing a mentoring approach to supervision, the Director is expected to represent Phoenix in all interactions with members, staff, contractors, community partners and the broader MA community. The Phoenix is a dynamic, creative and fast-paced environment requiring employees to be flexible and adaptable to ever changing situations. A strong connection to The Phoenix Mission and commitment to leading by example are critical to this position; preference will be given to those with personal experience in recovery from alcohol or a substance use disorder.



-Apply vision, innovation, and a business savvy approach to launching the new Phoenix anchor chapter in Boston to rapidly grow the visibility and utilization of the program
-Implement best business practice and management techniques that maintain a vibrant workplace culture and well run facility
-Work in collaboration with the Phoenix leadership team to refine and expand a workforce development initiative that supports individuals in recovery who are seeking careers and certification in various fitness domains
-Oversee/manage general daily administrative needs and tasks of the Boston Chapter, including scheduling programs, events, and outreach activities, and ensuring that facilities and equipment are in functioning order
-Supervise the program and administrative staff of the Boston Chapter including hiring, training, supervision, discipline and termination as needed
-In collaboration with the CrossFit Gym Manager, oversee and assist with facility maintenance and upkeep to ensure the facility and programming space are trauma-informed (accessible, clean, safe, welcoming), and reflect The Phoenix's core values and community standards
-Oversee volunteer orientation, training, recruitment, retention and workload (especially as they are required to support instructors and programs)
-In collaboration with the New England Regional Director and Executive Director, formulate the chapter budget decisions and manage all aspects of operations, generating revenue, and helping to ensure sustainable programming for Boston
-Contribute to the online presence (including both social media messaging and website maintenance) for the Boston Chapter
-Oversee and implement a big picture vision for achieving community impact goals and program outcome measures
-Analyze performance of chapter and programs, provide feedback, guidance and training to impact results
-Work as part of a larger team to build a robust sober active community in Boston & surrounding communities
-Work closely with other staff to coordinate on Phoenix-wide policy and procedure, learn from and offer advice to others in a collaborative manner
-Attend and participate in local and national staff meetings, and programming and partnership team meetings
-Review and respond promptly, accurately and cordially to all inquiries
-Be an ambassador for The Phoenix at all times
-Other duties as assigned
-Work evening and weekend hours as needed
-Travel for meetings as necessary


-Bachelor's degree
-3-5 years of experience in a non-profit or comparable management role
-Familiar with the Greater Boston area and peer recovery support network
-Lived experience as a peer in recovery preferred
-Experience with budgets and program management
-Possess excellent organizational and communication skills, professionalism, and the ability to quickly adapt to change
-NASM, NSCA, ACSM, or ACE personal trainer preferred
-CF-L1 or higher-level CrossFit certification preferred
-Experience facilitating group fitness or outdoor adventure programs preferred
-Familiarity with other disciplines, including yoga, climbing, running, cycling, etc. is a plus
-Ability to use standard office equipment, computer equipment, and proficient with software including word processing, spreadsheet applications and email
-Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to relate to people from all walks of life
-Entrepreneurial spirit, humility, and integrity
-Knowledge and consistent demonstration of excellent customer service skills
-Ability to listen well and communicate effectively orally and in writing with various audiences
-Ability to work effectively with employees, management, customers, other governmental agencies, community members and the general public
